The Proposal
Michael had asked Laura's parents for her hand in marriage in August 2011, unbeknownst to her. While her mother struggled to keep this secret, the engagement ring was special ordered from Fort Wayne. The ring was overnighted and arrived in Clemson hours before his trip to visit Laura for the weekend. Michael and Laura had decided to go on a 7am walk on the beach that Saturday morning. While Michael insisted on showering and wearing normal clothing for the morning ahead, Laura refused both of those things and wore workout clothes. On the way across the bridge to Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island, it started to sprinkle, at which time Laura made clear her displeasure at continuing to go on a walk. Luckily, the weather cleared up and turned into a beautiful morning! While walking on the beach, Michael tried holding Laura's hand, but she wouldn't because it throws one off balance while walking on sand for exercise. This marked the second time that morning that Laura expressed her displeasure with how the morning was progressing. On the way back, after another futile hand-holding attempt, Michael told her that she wouldn't regret holding his hand, got on one knee, and asked her to marry him! She obviously said YES! and could say nothing but, "OH!....WOW!...." for the next ten minutes.Michael and Laura then had a delicious breakfast at the Sunshine Cafe on Hilton Head Island, called family and friends, and then went out to a nice dinner in the evening.
How We Met
This classic love story begins in the Fall of 2007 at Ball State University. Laura was a junior studying elementary education and had recently joined the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. A year younger, Michael was in his second year at Ball State studying architecture. Like Laura, Michael was also in a Greek organization, being a proud member of the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI).The Fijis and Alpha Chis participated in a number of social events that year and it was during one of those events that Michael and Laura were introduced. Their time together grew over the next year and a half, and as a result, so did their friendship. It was in the summer of 2008, recently after Michael had turned the ripe age of 21, that he realized his true feelings towards Laura Sims. From that moment, Michael embarked on a semester-long endeavor to win the affection of Laura. Although Laura and Michael were close friends at that time, Laura did not immediately reciprocate the feelings that Michael had expressed. That however, did not deter Michael in the least, and he held out hope that one day, Laura would change her mind. And she did. It was December 20, 2008 when Laura and Michael finally went out on their first official date. From there, the rest is history. Laura graduated a year ahead of Michael in 2009 and worked in Indianaplis as a 3rd grade teacher while Michael finished his final year of architecture at Ball State. When Michael decided to go to Clemson University for graduate school, Laura made the decision to also move to South Carolina. Laura found a wonderful job teaching second grade at Hilton Head Island elementary school and Michael found the charming pleasure of football and southern dialect between studying in Charleston and Clemson. Laura is still currently teaching in Hilton Head while Michael finishes his final semester at Clemson.
Future Plans...
Unfortunately, we have yet to determine where we will be or what we will be doing following the wedding in July. At the moment, it would appear that we will land in either Greenville, South Carolina, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, or in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We are continuing to pray and most certainly welcome any prayers and support that anyone may have. We will keep you updated!!!
